The Orioles have a new first base coach, the latest move to build a staff under first-time manager Craig Albernaz.
A source has confirmed the hiring of Jason Bourgeois, who spent the past two seasons as first base and outfield coach with the White Sox. He wasn’t returning in 2026, which created an opportunity in Baltimore.
Bourgeois, 43, is replacing Anthony Sanders, who took a job as Tigers first base coach. Sanders also worked with the outfielders, a responsibility that now falls to Bourgeois.
This is the second hire for the Orioles after hitting coach Dustin Lind, who served as an assistant hitting coach with the Phillies.
Bourgeois had an eight-year major league career as a player, beginning with the White Sox in 2008. He also played for the Brewers in 2009, Astros in 2010-11, Royals in 2012, Rays in 2013 and Reds in 2014-15. He batted .253/.300/.326 in 317 games.
Sprint speed and defense were the most impressive tools for Bourgeois, who stole 31 bases in 37 attempts in 2011.
Albernaz has a connection with Bourgeois going back to 2013, when they were teammates with the Triple-A Durham Bulls.
The Orioles must replace bench coach Robinson Chirinos, and they also removed assistant hitting coaches Sherman Johnson and Tommy Joseph from this year’s staff. Johnson accepted a job as White Sox minor league hitting coordinator.
Former hitting coach Cody Asche joined the Tigers as assistant hitting coach.
The Baltimore Banner first reported the Bourgeois hiring.
* The Orioles are signing right-handed reliever Enoli Paredes to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to a source. The deal will become official after he passes a physical.
Paredes, 30, has registered a 3.00 ERA in 55 games over parts of four seasons. He’s walked 41 batters and struck out 53 in 54 innings.
Paredes made his major league debut with the Astros in 2020 and appeared in 37 games over three seasons. He pitched in 17 games with the Brewers and one with the Cubs in 2024.
The Braves signed him in November and he posted a 4.40 ERA in 46 games with Triple-A Gwinnett this year, striking out 72 batters in 57 1/3 innings.
Houston signed Paredes as an amateur free agent in 2016, when Mike Elias was scouting director. The Orioles hired Elias two years later as executive vice president/general manager before this year's promotion to president of baseball operations.
Ari Alexander of 7News first reported the Paredes news.
Update: The Orioles announced the deal.
