Orioles injury updates and notes before today's game against Cardinals

The Orioles are back home today, trying to snap an eight-game losing streak at Camden Yards, after going a combined 3-4 in Milwaukee and Boston. They haven't posted a lineup against the Cardinals, but catcher Adley Rutschman apparently won't be in it.

Rutschman was nailed on the mask yesterday by Rafael Devers’ foul ball in the third inning and Maverick Handley pinch-hit for him in the fifth. Triple-A Norfolk catcher Chadwick Tromp is on the medical taxi squad.

Interim manager Tony Mansolino didn’t provide an update on Rutschman or specify whether the catcher is in concussion protocol.

Ryan Mountcastle is 9-for-18 with seven runs scored in four career games played on Memorial Day. He collected four hits in 2022.

Gunnar Henderson needs two more hits to reach 400. He’d join Manny Machado, Eddie Murray, Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr. and Boog Powell as Orioles to do it before age 24.

Charlie Morton allowed two runs in 9 1/3 innings in three relief appearances and makes his first start today since May 7 in Minnesota. His ERA is down to 7.68 and his WHIP to 1.756 in 12 games.

Morton is 4-12 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.607 WHIP in 22 career starts against the Cardinals. Nolan Arenado is 6-for-24 with three doubles and a home run.

Gary Sánchez (wrist) is taking batting practice on the field, and Ramón Laureano (ankle) is hitting in the cage.

Outfielder Colton Cowser and infielder Jordan Westburg are reporting to Norfolk on injury rehab assignments. Cowser appeared in three games at High-A Aberdeen.

The Orioles have won back-to-back games for only the third time this season. They were swept by the Cardinals in a three-game series last year in St. Louis. The Cardinals won two of three in Baltimore in 2023.

The Orioles, Rockies and White Sox are the only teams with a sub-.400 records in interleague games since the beginning of last season.

Also, the Orioles are 0-5-0 in interleague series this season and have lost six straight dating back to last year., tied for the second-longest in franchise history after 11 in a row from 2003-2005, per STATS.

Right-hander Erick Fedde, the former Nationals first-round draft pick, has a complete-game shutout in D.C. among his 10 starts this season. He brings a 3.77 ERA into today’s game, with only five home runs surrendered in 57 1/3 innings. He averages only 5.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Fedde has had tremendous success against the Orioles in his four appearances (three starts). He’s allowed one run in 23 2/3 innings.

The current Orioles are 1-for-25 against him. Mountcastle, who didn’t play yesterday, is 1-for-5.

The Cardinals are 30-23 and in second place in the National League Central, two games behind the Cubs. They’re 11-15 on the road.

St. Louis has won 16 of its last 20 games and no longer is the soft spot in an opponent’s schedule.
