Each time Brad Bergesen begins to warm in the Orioles’ bullpen, Chris Jakubauskas makes a big pitch to end an inning and stay in the game.
He’s not especially sharp tonight, but he’s stubborn.
The Orioles had a chance to wipe out a four-run deficit, or at least take a big chunk out of it, after loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Felix Pie and Blake Davis singled, and J.J. Hardy reached on an infield hit.
Chris Carpenter was teetering.

The Orioles couldn’t topple him.
Nick Markakis tapped into a 1-2 force. Adam Jones flied to shallow left field, with Pie holding at third base. And Vladimir Guerrero, batting .226 with runners in scoring position this season, flied to right after getting ahead, 2-0.
Guerrero was batting .207 with runners in scoring position and two outs.
Needless to say, you could hear a smattering of boos as the inning ended. The 2-3-4 batters come to the plate with the sacks full, and Pie can’t budge from third base.
The Orioles are 1-for-14 with RISP in this series.
Bergesen has replaced Jakubauskas, who allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings, with three walks, two strikeouts and a hit batter. He threw 88 pitches, 56 for strikes.
Another Orioles starter can’t pitch deep into a game.
