The Orioles will try to rediscover their winning touch tonight against Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano, who gave up five earned runs (six total) and eight hits in four innings in his only start against them this season.
Liriano is 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in five career starts against the Orioles.
Liriano is 3-8 with a 4.93 ERA and 1.41 WHIP this season, but he’s allowed one earned run in three of his last five starts, one earned run or fewer in five of nine, and three earned runs or fewer in five of six and seven of nine.
Left-handers are hitting .145 against Liriano. Manager Buck Showalter will have eight players batting from the right side against him tonight.
Jones is 3-for-9 with two homers lifetime against Liriano.
Twins catcher Joe Mauer is 4-for-9 with a double and home run against Hunter.
In case you missed it, the Orioles were awarded the fourth pick in the Competitive Balance Lottery, which they will receive after the first and supplemental rounds of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. The pick can be traded during the season.
Pitcher Kevin Gausman, the Orioles’ first-round pick this year, is headed to Sarasota today and will begin working out tomorrow at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.
Down on the farm, Double-A Bowie second baseman Jonathan Schoop’s streak of hitting a home run ended at three games today. He went 0-for-4 and committed his 14th error in the Baysox’s 5-2 victory over Erie.
Second baseman Ryan Adams started his injury-rehab assignment today with the Gulf Coast League Orioles and went 0-for-2 with a walk and strikeout in a 16-1 loss to the GCL Red Sox.
Steve Johnson is starting tonight for Triple-A Norfolk. The Tides have used 23 starting pitchers this season, just two shy of the International League record set by Buffalo in 2002 and 2004. They’ve used 67 different players this season, seven shy of the league record of 74 set by the 2003 Louisville Bats.
