The Orioles are back home for the first time since Aug. 6 and they’re in a three-way tie for the last Wild Card.
A 5-5 road trip left the Orioles with a 61-64 record. The Yankees own the top Wild Card at 69-55, including 38-28 on the road.
The Orioles were swept in a four-game series in the Bronx May 1-4, and they were outscored 39-10. But they won two of three later that month in Baltimore.
Pete Alonso is the designated hitter again tonight. He’s is batting .529 (18-for-34) with five home runs and 10 RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak.
Adam Jones is the last Oriole to reach those totals in a nine-game span in a minimum 20 plate appearances in 2015, per STATS.
Coby Mayo is the cleanup hitter and first baseman. He’s batting .289/.351/.702 with 12 home runs against left-handers this season.
Jackson Holliday is the leadoff hitter, Tyler O’Neill is playing right field, Leody Taveras is in center field and Christian Franklin is in left. Carlos Narváez is catching.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand has 22 RBIs in 24 career games with the Orioles. Nelson Cruz holds the record with 25 in his first 25 games in 2014, per STATS. Trey Mancini, who announced his retirement this morning, had 23 in 25 games from 2016-17. Mark Trumbo had 22 RBIs in 2016 and Jim Gentile had 21 in 1960.
Shane Baz is 4-12 with a 4.00 ERA in 24 starts. He tossed his first-career complete game in Texas but followed it by allowing five runs and nine hits in three innings in Minnesota.
Baz faced the Yankees on May 4 and allowed five earned runs and six total in 5 2/3 innings. Aaron Judge hit a home run. He’s made seven career starts against the Yankees and posted a 7.00 ERA and 1.926 WHIP in 27 innings.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 5-for-9 with a double and home run. Austin Wells is 3-for-6 with a homer. Trent Grisham is 3-for-8 with two doubles and a homer.
Judge is 5-for-12 with three homers, but he hasn’t played since May 31 due to a fractured right rib.
Baz has registered a 3.92 ERA over his last 10 starts, but he’s 0-6 during that span and the Orioles have gone 1-9. He’s taken the loss in five of his quality starts this season, tied for second most behind Tanner Bibee.
The Orioles haven’t been swept at home since August 2025, with at least one win in 24 straight series.
Left-hander Carlos Rodón is reinstated from the injured list after missing almost two months with left elbow inflammation. The three-time All-Star underwent surgery Oct. 15 to clean out his elbow and shave a bone spur, and he felt some tightness in his right hamstring in late March that delayed his season debut until May 10.
Rodón has a 3.30 ERA in nine starts, with 26 walks and 52 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings. He’s made nine career appearances against the Orioles and posted a 4.53 ERA in 43 2/3 innings.
Gunnar Henderson is 3-for-12 with two home runs against Rodón. Narváez is 3-for-9 with a double and homer. O’Neill is 3-for-11 with a double and homer.
Left-hander Max Fried went on the 15-day injured list yesterday with a left elbow bone bruise.
Ben Rice is batting .160 since the break. He led the team with a .279 average in the first half.
The Yankees have the second-most home runs in the majors with 171 and the second-lowest average at .229. They could be the first team to lead the American League in homers and finish last in average since the 1991 Tigers.
The Yankees have lost 16 games this season when their starting pitcher allowed one run or fewer, which is tied for the franchise’s seventh-highest total since earned runs were tracked in 1913, per STATS.
