Jorge Mateo and Ramón Urías are out of the lineup tonight due to their physical issues, which puts Richie Martin back in the Orioles lineup for the series opener against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.

Martin is playing shortstop in his first game since the Orioles recalled him.

Urías continues to receive treatment on his right upper leg and Mateo is enduring some unspecified discomfort. Manager Brandon Hyde saw Mateo struggle to get out of the box last night and wondered if the shortstop slipped or tweaked his lower back.

Austin Hays is in right field tonight and Ryan McKenna is in left. Austin Wynns is catching.

Thumbnail image for Ellis-Throws-Gray-TOR-Sidebar.jpgChris Ellis makes his fourth start with the Orioles after allowing four runs and eight hits in 12 2/3 innings. A scoring change left him with one hit over five scoreless innings in Saturday’s game at Yankee Stadium.

Ellis’ previous start was against the Blue Jays in Toronto, when he allowed one run and two hits in 4 2/3 innings. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered off Ellis and Marcos Diplán.

Guerrero is batting .362/.415/.915 with two doubles, eight home runs and 18 RBIs in 12 games against the Orioles.

The Royals shut out the Orioles last night for the first time since May 17, 2014.

Hyde confirmed that pitchers Matt Harvey and Jorge López will be shut down for the rest of the season. Harvey has inflammation in his right knee and López sprained his right ankle.

Hyde isn’t ready to announce his other starter for Saturday’s doubleheader, saying he’ll wait until the morning. Keegan Akin gets one of those games.

Left-hander Robbie Ray’s Cy Young campaign is gaining momentum. He’s 11-5 with a 2.60 ERA and 0.994 WHIP in 27 starts and is averaging 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings. His ERA leads the American League.

Ray has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last eight starts and has struck out 45 batters in his last four appearances, totaling 28 2/3 innings.

Ray has started twice against the Orioles this summer and gone 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. He’s allowed four runs and 10 hits with three walks and 15 strikeouts.

Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle have homered off Ray.

The Blue Jays (77-62) have won eight in a row and 11 of 12. They just swept the Yankees in a four-game series and are a half-game behind in the wild card race.

So, yes, this series at Camden Yards is important.
