“I felt like command was there early in the counts and I just wasn’t putting people away,” Means said on his Zoom call. “Just taking some long at-bats, getting two strikes, but not putting them away. That’s really it.

“I’m healthy. I feel like my pitches are breaking well, just not executing them as well as I’d like, especially with two strikes. That’s the name of the game. You can get two strikes all you want, but you’ve got to get them out. I like where I’m at, I like where my pitches are. It’s just executing is the last step.”

The Phillies are starting right-hander Zack Wheeler, who registered a 2.92 ERA and 1.169 WHIP and allowed only three home runs in 73 innings last summer after signing as a free agent. He hit seven batters, tying for most in the majors.

Wheeler has made two starts this spring and surrendered four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He’s walked four batters and struck out six.

Former Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis has retired, as reported by The Athletic and later announced by the Braves. Markakis, 37, was a first-round draft pick who spent his first nine seasons in Baltimore. He retires with 2,388 career hits.
