Orioles notes on rotation, Dubin, Machín, Young and more (plus lineups)

The Orioles will switch to a six-man rotation after Tyler Wells is placed on the expanded roster next month.

Wells will become part of a unit that includes Kyle Bradish, Trevor Rogers, Dean Kremer, Tomoyuki Sugano and Cade Povich. The Orioles chose to start Wells rather than move him to the bullpen.

“If everybody can stay healthy, that would be great,” said interim manager Tony Mansolino.

“It’s good. It gives Dean an extra day, it gives Tomo an extra day. Nobody will pitch on regular rest the rest of the year.”

Bradish responded favorably to his first start beyond an injury rehab assignment last night since June 2024.

“Good,” Mansolino said. “Just talked to him in the office about something else. Great spirits. He’s back. That’s the cool thing is that feeling like the rehab’s officially over. There’s no more rehab. He’s now a major league starter again.”

Bradish certainly did look the part with his 10 strikeouts in six innings, the only mistakes leading to a pair of solo home runs.

“He started a major league game, pitched his butt off, was pretty electric in the stuff that he had,” Mansolino said. “He woke up today, he felt great, and he falls right back into the routine that is who he is.”

Reliever Shawn Dubin is expected to join the club on Thursday, bringing another roster move.

The Orioles swapped infielders by selecting Emmanuel Rivera’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk and designating Vimael Machín for assignment. The Orioles wanted to tighten the defense at third base.

Machín went 1-for-11 with a home run in his first major league action in three years.

“I just think the big thing right now is having some more stability in the infield in some ways.” Mansolino said. “We are really proud of Machín. He’s a guy that hadn’t been in the big leagues for a couple years and went to Mexico and really fought for his career and performed at a high level. Went to Norfolk, was just a model citizen in Norfolk, played great in Norfolk, did a lot of things and earned his way to the big leagues here. So very proud of him for that.

“I think just going back to this last week at home, not having (Jordan) Westburg in the infield, we’ve had some misplays at third base, unfortunately, and it’s a really hard game to play, and we understand that. No players are perfect, by any means. I think Emmanuel Rivera is a guy who’s excelled defensively in the big leagues at third base. I think just trying to get a little more stability at the position for us, knowing that the other corner spot we have a young infielder learning there, as well. Get three guys in the infield who are stable right now and I think it’ll just help out the pitching staff and the rest of the defense.”

Jeremiah Jackson is starting at third base tonight.

Westburg (right ankle sprain) worked out on the field again today.

Brandon Young expects to have a normal offseason with a six-week recovery from the hamstring strain that forced him onto the 60-day injured list.

“I feel pretty good,” he said. “I’m ready to start throwing. I don’t think they’re letting me. But just frustrating, but I think I’ll be good for the offseason.”
