Orioles option Carlson and select Rivera contract, today's O's lineup and notes

The Orioles are hoping that they have more runs in the tank today after scoring 22 last night, which fell one short of the franchise record.

Jordan Westburg is out of the lineup after reinjuring his left index finger last night on a dive into second base. X-rays were negative for a fracture.

Needing another infielder while Westburg is day-to-day, the Orioles selected Emmanuel Rivera’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk, optioned outfielder Dylan Carlson and designated pitcher Kyle Tyler for assignment.

Carlson is batting .241/.278/.389 in 40 games. Rivera is hitting .232/.303/.275 in 25 games with the Orioles.

Tyler was selected on waivers from the Phillies on June 15. He made two relief appearances with Norfolk and allowed one earned run and two total with six hits in four innings.

Chadwick Tromp is catching this afternoon, with Gary Sánchez serving as designated hitter. Ramón Urías is batting second and playing third base.

Zach Eflin’s ERA is up to 5.46 and his WHIP to 1.377 in 11 starts. He’s allowed 13 runs and 22 hits over eight innings in his last two games.

The Rays tallied seven runs and 12 hits against him in five innings in Tampa.

The Orioles remain seven games back for the last Wild Card. The Rays trail the first-place Yankees by 1 ½.

The Orioles’ .572 slugging percentage this month with runners in scoring position is second highest in the majors behind the Diamondbacks’.588.

Right-hander Zack Littell has a 3.78 ERA and 1.096 WHIP in 16 starts. He’s walked only 11 batters in 97 2/3 innings but also has surrendered 22 home runs to lead the majors.

Littell faced the Orioles in Tampa and allowed three runs in six innings in the Rays’ 5-1 loss. Colton Cowser hit a solo homer.

Littell owns a 3.03 ERA in eight career games (six starts) against the Orioles, and a 2.30 ERA in three starts at Camden Yards.

Gunnar Henderson is 7-for-18 with a double and two home runs against Littell. Cowser is 4-for-11 with a triple and two homers. Ramón Laureano is 4-for-9 with a home run.
