Cade Povich had his left elbow examined today, including an MRI, and could receive a cortisone injection in an attempt to combat the inflammation that forced him onto the 15-day injured list.

The Orioles are considering other options with Povich, who exited last night’s start in Miami after three innings because of the discomfort.

“It’s in kind of an interesting spot, where triceps, like on the lateral side of the forearm-ish,” said manager Craig Albernaz.

“It’s not on the inside. It’s on the outside, which is better than the alternative. I’m also glad he said something, too. I can only imagine for him, that feeling. He said he felt it in the second, so you’re not sure what that could be and if he could pitch through it, because every baseball player is always focused on the other side of the elbow, so when that pops up …

“He said in the third inning it really started to tighten up on him. I’m glad he said something, for sure.”

Twelve players are on the injured list and the Orioles have used it 17 times. Included are starters Zach Eflin, Dean Kremer and Trevor Rogers.

Tough for a manager to get into a rotation rhythm.

“I think every game I go into, you kind of have to be ready for anything,” Albernaz said. “The game is so unpredictable. You can go in expecting your starter to have 110 pitches and go seven innings, or the vice-versa where the pitch count’s 80 and next thing you know, you look up and he’s in the seventh. It’s just one of those things where you kind of have to be ready for anything and kind of prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

“Luckily, our starters have all the potential in the world. They’ve shown flashes of what they can do. And we have depth, which is awesome. And our bullpen has been outstanding to pick up the slack, too, where the starters are either up against their pitch count or they have to go on the IL or miss a start.”

*The Orioles recalled Trey Gibson from Triple-A Norfolk, and he’s in the bullpen tonight. The club needs a long reliever and Gibson can cover innings after making his major league debut in Sunday’s start in New York.

Albernaz said Tyler Wells was a consideration, “and he still is.” However, Wells would have to replace an injured player to be recalled in less than 15 days after the Orioles optioned him.

“It all depends where our pitching is,” Albernaz said.

*Coby Mayo’s throwing error last night after bobbling a ground ball that took a tricky hop produced a walk-off loss to the Marlins. He’s the designated hitter tonight with the Athletics starting left-hander Jacob Lopez.

Albernaz didn’t think that Mayo needed a mental break.

“He’s ready to go today,” Albernaz said. “I had a chance to talk with Coby after the game. Not immediately after, but we had some other discussions to figure out on the pitching side with Cade and the bullpen. We wanted to make sure we got whoever was coming up in motion and stuff. So I grabbed Coby afterwards and he was down on himself, but not in the sense of he’s checked out.

“I think it’s disappointment. He’s working. He has worked and is still working hard at third base. Early in the game he made an outstanding play on Esteury Ruiz. He’s one of the fastest runners in the game. So there’s a lot of growth there, but also, still a lot of work to be done and he acknowledges that. Our conversation was awesome. It put me in the right headspace and he was in the right headspace to put him in the lineup today.”

Mayo came up as a third baseman and moved to first last summer. The Orioles needed him at third this year with Jordan Westburg on the injured list, and the improvement was evident in spring training. But also, the occasional mistakes.

Asked whether Mayo, a former top prospect in the organization, has shown enough to stick at the position long term, Albernaz said, “Yeah. I mean, the kid’s only 24 years old.

“It’s still a lot of development left, just like with all our guys. Everyone has stuff to work on. And with Coby, yeah, there’s been some really good and there’s been some bad, and that’s why I say development is messy, and none of these guys are finished products. And especially with Coby, where he was getting reps at first base last year and he came up as a third baseman. Now he’s back at third, and he’s taken to it well. He’s continuing to work, and I have no problem with him going out and playing third base for us.”

*The Orioles acquired pitchers Enyel Garcia, 18, and Maicol Lauriano, 20, from the Phillies today for cash considerations.

Garcia posted a 5.79 ERA in seven relief appearances in the Dominican Summer League last year, and Lauriano had a 4.43 ERA in 14 games (one start).

*Fans lined up hours before gates opened at 5 p.m. to get their Tupac bobbleheads. Albernaz is a fan of the late rapper and made sure to take home his share.

“Yeah, I grabbed three of them,” he said.

“Everyone’s excited for that. But also, everyone’s excited just to be home. You know, Friday night game here in Baltimore. Long, grindy road trip. The boys are excited to get out here and be in front of our fan base, packed house. So it will be a fun night.”

Albernaz said two of the bobbleheads are for his sons, CJ and Norm. Gigi, the youngest in the family, might be excluded.

“Gigi doesn’t know Tupac yet,” he said. “Norm and CJ do. That’s a whole different story.”

For anyone who’s curious, Albernaz’s favorite Tupac songs are “Pain” and “All Eyez on Me.” He chose the latter as the song that most encapsulates his team.

“Especially with our group and where we’re at right now,” he said. “I think that’s a very fitting song for us.”

*Blaze Alexander was scratched from tonight’s lineup with right calf tightness.

Weston Wilson is playing third base and batting ninth.
