Reliever Yennier Cano played catch on the field and threw in the bullpen this afternoon to test his right hamstring, and a trip to the injured list seems unlikely at this juncture.
Cano came out of Wednesday night’s game with tightness in his hamstring after loading the bases with no outs.
“It’s trending in the right direction,” said manager Craig Albernaz. “We’ll know more on his status after he throws, but by all accounts he’s feeling good.”
The bullpen underwent another change today.
The Orioles brought back Albert Suárez, but this time on a major league deal. Cameron Weston was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after his scoreless inning last night in his major league debut.
Suárez has been designated for assignment three times since the Orioles non-tendered him in November and re-signed him to a minor league contract. He accepted one outright assignment, declined two and stayed in the organization.
There aren’t a lot of players who could handle being on the DFA treadmill.
“To be honest with you, no,” Albernaz said. “That’s why we love Albert. He’s a special individual. I think anyone that’s been around him knows it’s very tough to find someone who’s more genuine than him. He’s such a great teammate. He’s also a really good pitcher, too, and his ability to kind of deal with the DFA and be in limbo and come right back in the clubhouse like nothing nothing ever happened and then toe the mound and get big league hitters out, it’s really impressive.
“He’s a valuable piece to kind of what we do, especially in the bullpen.”
A teammate with a locker in the same row as Suárez smiled and said, “He always finds his way home.”
“I’m kind of used to it,” said Suárez, who’s posted a 2.75 ERA and 1.169 WHIP in seven appearances. “This is a thing that I don’t control, so I always try to be ready, and whatever happens, I’m just glad to be here, to be ready to help the team.”
The Orioles have an understanding with Suárez when he’s designated that they intend to bring him back, but other teams are able to claim him on waivers.
“They say they would like to have me back and I’ll be back, but at the same time, everybody knows I have to clear waivers and go through the process,” he said. “It’s a process, but I’m glad I’m here and I’m ready to go.”
Suárez is grateful to the organization that signed him out of the Korea Baseball Organization and brought him back to the majors in 2024. They have a bond that can’t be broken.
“It’s very special,” he said. “I’ve been here the past two years, three years now, so for me, it’s very special. And this group of guys we have now this year is really awesome to play with.”
The Orioles transferred Dean Kremer to the 60-day injured list to make room for Suárez on the 40-man roster. Kremer is in Sarasota rehabbing his strained right quadriceps, and he’s eligible to return on June 19.
Kremer still needs to go on a rehab assignment and it won’t be a short stay. He’s only pitched twice, and his last start was April 18.
Silas Ardoin is here on the catcher taxi squad.
Due to a scoring change, Blaze Alexander is credited with a single Tuesday on a play that originally was ruled an error on Rays second baseman Richie Palacios.
The June 11 game against the Mariners at Camden Yards will air exclusively at 7:05 p.m. on ESPN.
