Shortstop J.J. Hardy, who’s missed four of the last five games with spasms and tightness in his lower back, hasn’t been told that he’s a candidate for the disabled list and reported significant improvement today.
“Not me, I don’t think. They haven’t told me anything,” he said.
“I made big strides today. I had spasms in a big area that kind of moved to a small area and that’s normally what happened back in the day. I was really hoping for the SI joint to release today. It didn’t, but when it does, that’s kind of the last step for me being able to do everything. Once that goes, I feel like I can run around.”
Hardy hopes to return to the lineup for Wednesday night’s series finale.
“I’m not going to rule out tomorrow,” he said. “If I make as big a jump as I did today, then yeah, I’ll be pretty good to go.
“I felt like I came in and really had a nice day, so we’ll see. Hopefully we’ll have that much improvement tomorrow morning. There’s still a little ways to go, but that’s kind of the goal for me.”
Hardy wasn’t an option coming off the bench today.
“It would have been tough,” he said. “I could have in an emergency situation. I would have been able to go out there, but it wouldn’t have been easy.”
Update: Infielder Jemile Weeks is headed to New York and will be officially recalled from Norfolk before Wednesday’s game, according to sources.
