The Orioles placed Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured this this morning with a right hamstring strain and recalled corner infielder Coby Mayo.
That wasn’t the extent of the changes.
Outfielder Jordyn Adams had his contract selected and he’s wearing No. 80. Catcher Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment.
Mountcastle exited last night’s game in the top of the eighth inning, after stealing home in a 2-1 win over the White Sox. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Mountcastle would be re-evaluated this morning.
A roster battered by injuries can’t get healthy.
Center fielder Cedric Mullins went on the 10-day IL yesterday with a right hamstring strain. The club already was missing outfielders Colton Cowser, Tyler O’Neill and Ramón Laureano.
Mountcastle had two more hits last night, giving him seven in his last three games. He’s batting .246/.280/.348 with 13 doubles and two home runs in 52 games. His last homer was hit April 30.
Injuries are an issue for Mountcastle in his career. He went on the IL Aug. 26, 2024 with a sprained left wrist. His 2023 season was interrupted twice by vertigo symptoms and a shoulder injury.
This is Mayo’s fourth stint with the Orioles since making his debut last August. He’s 1-for-12 with six strikeouts this season and 5-for-53 with 28 strikeouts in 21 games.
Mayo is batting .226/.318/.452 with 10 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 45 games with Norfolk. He gives the Orioles another option at first base besides Ryan O’Hearn and Emmanuel Rivera, and he also can back up at third base while Jordan Westburg continues his rehab assignment with Norfolk.
Adams is batting .212 with a .661 OPS in 39 games with Norfolk.
Dean Kremer tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings in Boston in his last start and he gets the ball this afternoon. He began the month with seven scoreless against the Royals.
Kremer has made two career starts against the White Sox and allowed only one run with 13 hits in 11 2/3 innings. Lenyn Sosa is 2-for-2 with a home run.
O’Neill (wrist), Gary Sánchez (shoulder) and Laureano (ankle) took early batting practice on the field.
White Sox right-hander Davis Martin has registered a 3.45 ERA in 11 games (10 starts). He’s struck out only 38 batters in 62 2/3 innings.
Left-handers are batting .211/.286/.368 against Martin this season, and right-handers are batting .297/.333/.455. He’s never faced the Orioles. Rivera is the only player with an at-bat against him, going 1-for-4 with a double.
