You know the words! During every seventh-inning stretch, hearing John Denver’s “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” is as much a part of going to an Orioles game as the hot dog race, a Boog’s BBQ sandwich or a stroll down Eutaw Street.
Since the players hear the song every home game, we decided to test their knowledge of the 1974 classic. Lefty Paul Fry was the first to embrace the challenge even though he’s often in the zone warming up in the bullpen when the song is being played.
Reliever Evan Phillips has probably heard the song more than any other player on the team. He’s a native of Salisbury, Md., and grew up going to Orioles games with his parents.
So we put the pitchers to the test with a little fill-in-the-blank quiz to see just how much of the song they know.
“There’s going to be a lot of Baltimore fans that are really mad at us,” Fry said.
