The Orioles are ready to debut another player for the 2018 season.
Reliever Jhan Mariñez was placed on the 10-day disabled list today with a strained right hamstring and the Orioles recalled right-hander Evan Phillips from Triple-A Norfolk.
Phillips will wear No. 58.
The Orioles acquired Phillips, infielder Jean Carlos Encarnación, catcher Brett Cumberland and left-hander Bruce Zimmermann – along with $2.5 million in international signing bonus slot money – from the Braves on Tuesday for starter Kevin Gausman and reliever Darren O’Day.
Phillips, 23, is a native of Salisbury, Md., who attended UNC Wilmington before the Braves selected him in the 17th round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. He was 4-4 with a 1.99 ERA, eight saves, 14 walks and 59 strikeouts this summer in 40 2/3 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett.
In four relief appearances with the Braves this season, Phillips was charged with six runs and six hits and surrendered three home runs in 6 /3 innings. He walked four batters and struck out three.
The last two outings produced 2 2/3 scoreless innings against the Marlins and Dodgers.
Phillips is 17-15 with a 3.61 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 132 games in the minors, with only one start on his ledger. He’s struck out 211 batters in 184 1/3 innings.
If Phillips pitches for the Orioles, he will become the 49th player used this season.
Mariñez left last night’s game after injuring the hamstring while warming up for the bottom of the fifth inning. He’s allowed five earned runs (six total) and nine hits with nine walks in eight innings.
Infielder Danny Valencia struck out Joey Gallo last night to end the eighth inning while becoming the eighth position player in Orioles history to appear in a game as pitcher. Chris Davis and Ryan Flaherty also have done it since the Orioles hired manager Buck Showalter.
Mark Trumbo needs three hits to reach 1,000 for his career.
