The latest roster move this morning brings Ryan Noda to the visiting clubhouse at Wrigley Field.
Noda, claimed on waivers yesterday from the White Sox, has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. He’s wearing No. 41.
The Orioles designated infielder/outfielder Terrin Vavra for assignment.
The 40-man roster has 35 players.
Noda, 29, appeared in 16 games with the White Sox this season and went 3-for-34 with a home run and 10 strikeouts. He played in 128 games with the Athletics in 2023 and 36 in 2024 and is a career .204/.341/.357 hitter. He smacked 16 home runs with 54 RBIs and a .770 OPS in ’23.
Noda provides a left-handed bat after the Orioles traded Ryan O’Hearn to the Padres. He has two minor league options.
Vavra pinch-hit yesterday and played second base, his first major league at-bat since 2023.
The Orioles will try to win their series against the Cubs with rookie Brandon Young making his ninth major league start.
He’s coming off the best of his young career.
Young completed six innings for the first time and held the Blue Jays to two runs. He struck out six batters for the third time.
Tyler O’Neill was scratched from yesterday’s lineup with an illness and we’ll find out later this morning when he’s playing.
Gunnar Henderson, whose three-run homer yesterday in the eighth inning gave the Orioles a 4-3 win, is slugging .721 when ahead in the count this season, per STATS.
Jordan Westburg has a .333 average since the beginning of July, up from .228 through the end of June.
Cubs right-hander Colin Rea returned to the team this year after pitching for them in 2020 and has posted a 4.25 ERA and 1.321 WHIP in 22 games (18 starts). He’s recorded one save.
Rea allowed one earned run in each of his first three starts in July, but over the last two surrendered 10 total (nine earned) and 15 hits over nine innings.
Left-handers are hitting .302/.357/.538 against him this season, and right-handers are hitting .244/.282/.381.
Rea has made two career starts against the Orioles and allowed three runs in 10 2/3 innings.
* O'Neill remains out of the lineup. Jeremiah Jackson gets another start in right field and moves up to fifth.
