Cade Povich is recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to make tonight’s start against the Brewers at Camden Yards.

The Orioles optioned reliever Codi Heuer to create room on the roster. Heuer didn’t appear in a game.

Povich is inserted into the rotation with Kyle Bradish on the injured list. Bradish has a sports hernia.

The last major league start for Povich came on Aug. 31, when he allowed one run in five innings in Colorado and lowered his ERA from 4.45 to 4.05. The Orioles optioned him the next day.

The White Sox defeated the Tigers last night to push the Orioles three games back for the last Wild Card with nine remaining.

The Orioles could join a short list of teams to make the playoffs after being three-plus games back with nine left: The 2007 Rockies, 2004 Angels, 1964 Cardinals, 1962 Giants, 1951 New York Giants and 1934 Cardinals. The Orioles have the toughest remaining strength of schedule in the majors.

Right-hander Dustin May, acquired from the Cardinals in a deadline trade, has registered a 4.91 ERA in seven starts with the Brewers.

May has made two career appearances against the Orioles (one start) and allowed two runs and nine hits in eight innings. He tossed two scoreless relief innings at Camden Yards.

Pete Alonso is 2-for-5 against May. Dylan Beavers is 2-for-2.

The Brewers have the best record in the majors at 95-58. They’ve won 10 of 15 this month, including seven of the last nine. They’re 52-26 at home and 43-32 on the road.

Milwaukee is trying to become the first team to post the best record in back-to-back seasons since the 2010-11 Phillies.

The Brewers are an offensive oddity, tied for the second-fewest homers hit but ranking second in runs scored. The last team to finish in the bottom and top two in those categories was the 1900 Brooklyn Superbas, per STATS.

The Baltimore Orioles, a different franchise from the current entity, did it from 1894-98.

The Orioles lost two of three in Milwaukee last season and two of three at Camden Yards in 2024. The Brewers have claimed the last seven series.
