The Orioles have made a roster move that they’re hoping will inject more offense into their catching tandem.

Yohel Pozo was recalled today from Double-A Chesapeake after spending yesterday on the Orioles’ taxi squad. Sam Huff was designated for assignment.

Pozo was selected off waivers from the Cardinals on Thursday and optioned to Triple-A Norfolk before joining the Baysox. He’s a career .247/.273/.363 hitter in 106 games, the first 21 with the Rangers in 2021. He didn’t get back to the majors until last season with St. Louis.

Adley Rutschman is on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation, and Samuel Basallo joined him with right shoulder inflammation. A dynamic duo is missed, with Huff and Chadwick Tromp going a combined 1-for-24.

Tromp is 1-for-14 with six strikeouts. Huff is 0-for-10 with eight strikeouts.

Going further back, Huff is 4-for-33 with one walk and 19 strikeouts in 14 games. The Braves issued an intentional walk to Jackson Holliday yesterday with two outs in the 11th inning to load the bases and bring Huff to the plate. Huff grounded out in a 3-2 loss.

The Orioles could be in the market for a catcher with the trade deadline a week away. Rutschman can be reinstated from the IL on Wednesday, but the three-time All-Star was restricted over the weekend to throwing in the outfield and not catching the ball. Basallo can return a day later than Rutschman, but the Orioles shut him down to relieve the inflammation.

Tromp has been behind the plate for the last four games.

The 40-man roster is down to 39 players.

Pozo was assigned No. 79. The only Orioles to wear it are pitchers Nick Vespi and Konner Wade.
