MINNEAPOLIS – The Orioles have designated Matt Bowman for assignment this morning and recalled Colin Selby from Triple-A Norfolk to put a fresher arm in the bullpen.
Bowman tossed a scoreless inning last night but allowed runs in five of his last eight appearances. His ERA grew from 1.98 to 5.19 since April 27.
The Orioles outrighted Bowman on Opening Day but selected his contract after Albert Suárez went on the injured list March 30. He can reject another outright assignment and become a free agent.
The 40-man roster holds 39 players.
Selby has allowed two runs and three hits with four strikeouts in two innings with the Orioles this season. He has a 6.14 ERA in seven games with Norfolk, striking out 11 batters in 7 1/3 innings.
The stay could be brief with the Orioles reinstating Zach Eflin from the injured list this weekend in Anaheim.
Dean Kremer is working on an extra day of rest this afternoon after shutting out the Royals over seven innings at Camden Yards. He’s started twice against the Twins in his career and allowed 12 runs and 13 hits in seven innings. They scored five runs with six hits in four innings in his only appearance at Target Field in 2021.
In small sample sizes, Harrison Bader and Carlos Correa are 2-for-2 against him. Ty France is 1-for-9.
Kremer threw fewer fastballs in his last start (36.6 percent) compared to his first six starts (42 percent) in favor of more cutters and curveballs.
The Orioles are trying to snap a season-high four-game losing streak. They’re also trying to avoid falling 10 games below .500 for the first time since June 15, 2022.
The Orioles were supposed to face right-hander Joe Ryan, who has a 2.93 ERA and 0.900 WHIP in seven starts, but he was scratched with flu-like symptoms. Right-hander Bailey Ober gets the ball this afternoon.
Ober has made seven starts and posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.345 WHIP in 38 2/3 innings. He’s walked only eight batters.
Ober has allowed only one run in five starts and in each of his last three over 19 2/3 innings. He has three walks in his last five starts.
The Orioles have faced Ober three times in his career and scored four runs in 18 innings. Ryan O’Hearn is 4-for-10.
Twins pitchers lead the majors with a 3.48 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season, while the Orioles rank 24th at 2.08.
