BOSTON – With rain in the forecast throughout the day and night, the Orioles must endure their fourth postponement of the 2025 season.
Makes it harder to carry the momentum from yesterday’s 11-inning win in Milwaukee.
The Orioles and Red Sox will play a split doubleheader on Friday, with Game 1 at 1:35 p.m. and Game 2 at 7:10 p.m.
Both teams get a 27th man.
The Orioles already made up two of their first three postponed games, being swept in a doubleheader in Detroit and at home against the Twins. They have a day-night doubleheader against the Blue Jays on July 29 at Camden Yards.
Left-hander Cade Povich was supposed to start tonight, with Charlie Morton returning to the rotation on Friday.
Povich has a 5.23 ERA and 1.452 WHIP in eight starts. His 2025 debut came against the Red Sox at Camden Yards and he allowed three runs with eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Povich faced the Red Sox twice last year and allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings in Baltimore and four runs in 4 2/3 in Boston. Rob Refsnyder and current teammate Tyler O’Neill hit home runs.
O’Neill is on the injured list with a left shoulder impingement.
Povich had an 11.37 ERA in his first five road starts but has a 2.76 ERA in his next five.
Morton is 0-7 with a 7.68 ERA and 1.756 WHIP in 12 games (six starts). He’s allowed two runs over 9 1/3 innings in his last three relief appearances.
Morton is 8-3 with a 4.48 ERA in 16 career starts against the Red Sox and 4-1 with a 4.30 ERA in seven starts in Boston. Alex Bregman is 2-for-17 with a home run. Rafael Devers is 10-for-39 with two doubles.
An April 3 start against the Red Sox, Morton’s home debut, produced five runs and six hits allowed with 10 strikeouts over five innings. Bregman and Kristian Campbell hit home runs.
Cedric Mullins is batting .336 at Fenway Park since 2021, third-highest average in that span in a minimum 100 plate appearances, according to STATS. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has a .413 average and George Springer is next at .339.
The team’s .887 OPS in Boston since 2022 is second to the Astros’ .946. It’s the Orioles’ best three-year span at Fenway Park in franchise history.
The Orioles ended an eight-game losing streak yesterday. They lost two of three to the Red Sox in their first homestand of the season.
The victory Wednesday was just the third in Orioles’ history that happened after blowing leads in the ninth and 10th innings, per STATS.
Boston right-hander Lucas Giolito has a 7.08 ERA and 1.525 WHIP in four starts. He didn’t debut until April 30 because of a left hamstring strain. He’s allowed three runs and six innings in Toronto and one run and two hits in 6 2/3 innings in Kansas City, but his two home starts resulted in six runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 against the Rangers and six runs and eight hits in four innings against the Braves in his last outing.
Giolito’s 13.81 career ERA at Fenway Park is the second highest among pitchers with at least four starts behind Sean Manaea’s 15.70, per STATS.
Giolito owns a 5.19 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in five career starts against the Orioles. Cedric Mullins is 8-for-13 with three doubles and a triple, but Ryan O’Hearn, who had four hits yesterday, is 4-for-25 with a double, home run and 10 strikeouts.
Right-hander Brayan Bello, listed as Friday’s starter, has a 4.02 ERA and 1.691 WHIP in six starts this season. He’s walked 19 batters and struck out 20 in 31 1/3 innings.
In six career starts against the Orioles, Bello has registered a 3.66 ERA and 1.250 WHIP over 32 innings. Mullins is 4-for-11. Adley Rutschman is 2-for-13 with a double. Gunnar Henderson is 4-for-15 with two doubles and a home run.
The Red Sox lead the majors with 12 one-run losses and with 11 blown saves. They slipped into third place last night, a half-game behind the Blue Jays, with a 25-26 record.
