With many teams checking the market for available relievers prior to Monday evening’s trade deadline, the Orioles locked up one of their high-leverage right-handers with their latest contract extension.

Yennier Cano is the recipient of a two-year deal with a club option for 2029. Terms weren’t immediately known.

His old deal allowed him to test free agency after the 2028 season, but the Orioles bought out his arbitration years.

“We are thrilled to have Yennier continue as an Oriole,” control owner David Rubenstein said in a statement. “Mike Elias and his team’s ability to identify talent inside and outside the organization is positioning us for sustained success.”

Elias traded for Cano at the 2022 deadline, also getting back Cade Povich, Juan Nunez and Juan Rojas from the Twins for popular reliever Jorge López and cash.

Cano, 32, posted a 2.11 ERA with eight saves in 72 games and made the All-Star team in 2023, and he followed with a 3.15 ERA in 70 appearances in 2024. Cano slumped last season, registering a 5.12 ERA in 65 games and going through a brief demotion to Triple-A Norfolk, but he’s rebounded this season with a 2.21 ERA and 0.955 WHIP in 48 games.

Cano ranks second on the club in appearances this season behind Rico Garcia (50). He ranked first last year with 65, in 2024 with 70 and in 2023 with 72.

“Yennier has been outstanding for us both on and off the field since his arrival in 2022,” Elias said in a statement. “He has blossomed into one of the game’s most reliable and consistent relief pitchers. We are proud of all the hard work he has put in alongside our development team and are pleased he and his family will remain in Baltimore.”

The bullpen was viewed as a potential weakness heading into this season, and the Orioles lost closer Ryan Helsley twice with right elbow inflammation. He threw on the field today for the first time since returning to the injured list.

Keegan Akin underwent ligament-reconstructive surgery in his left elbow on July 15.

The extension for Cano follows deals with catcher Samuel Basallo last August for $67 million over eight years, starter Shane Baz in March for $68 million over five years and starter Kyle Bradish earlier this month for $90 million over five years.

*The Orioles transferred left-hander Dietrich Enns, right-hander Jose Espada, outfielder Michael Siani and infielder Luis Vazquez from Triple-A Norfolk to High-A Frederick, a move that keeps them close in case the roster undergoes changes at the deadline.

Update: Cano will receive $2.75 million next season and $4.75 million in 2028. The club option is worth $10 million.

Cano is making $1.6 million this season.
