The Orioles are making another series of roster moves.
They agreed to terms today with outfielder Greg Allen on a one-year major league contract. He’s wearing No. 25.
Allen, 32, is a switch-hitter who batted .270/.355/.440 with 14 doubles, a triple, six home runs and 32 RBIs in 61 games with Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs organization. He was released on Aug. 4.
Allen has a locker at Camden Yards.
Infielder/outfielder Vidal Bruján is gone. The Braves claimed him on waivers today.
The 40-man roster has 38 players.
First baseman Ryan Mountcastle said he’s in tonight’s lineup. The Orioles will reinstate him from the injured list and make a corresponding move.
Reliever Rico Garcia reported today.
Tomoyuki Sugano has a 4.42 ERA and 1.325 WHIP in 21 starts. He faced the Athletics in Sacramento and allowed three earned runs (four total) and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Sugano leads all rookies with eight wins. He’s the first Japanese-born American League rookie with at least 75 strikeouts and eight victories in a season since the Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka in 2014. John Means is the last Orioles rookie to post those numbers in a single season in 2019.
Adley Rutschman (1.044) and Gunnar Henderson (1.024) have two of the highest career OPS marks of any active player against the Athletics in a minimum 75 plate appearances, per STATS. Former Oriole Austin Hays is first at 1.168. Injured catcher Gary Sánchez is sixth at 1.007.
The Orioles are slugging .487 at home since Tony Mansolino became interim manager on May 17, best in the majors according to STATS. Their .278 average at home ranks second behind the Blue Jays’ .281.
Athletics right-hander J.T. Ginn was the Mets’ second-round pick in the 2020 draft out of Mississippi State. The Dodgers made him the 30th-overall selection in 2018 but he didn’t sign.
Ginn has appeared in 14 games this season, with seven starts, and posted a 4.28 ERA and 1.262 WHIP with 49 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. He has a 4.36 ERA and 1.364 WHIP as a starter and a 4.11 ERA and 1.043 WHIP in relief.
Right-handers are batting .202/.237/.330 against Ginn and left-handers are batting .316/.416/.605. Ginn has a 5.54 ERA and 1.538 WHIP in eight home games and a 2.82 ERA and 0.940 WHIP in six road games.
Ginn has never faced the Orioles. Alex Jackson has the only at-bat against him, going 0-for-1.
Rookie Nick Kurtz has gone on a tear since the beginning of July, batting .383/.484/.841 with 26 extra-base hits.
The Orioles lost two of three games in Sacramento.
The Athletics have shut out seven different opponents on the road this season , tied for their highest total in franchise history.
