The Orioles have signed all of their 2025 draft picks within the first 10 rounds.
The overall total grew to 14 out of 24 today with center fielder Slater de Brun, the 37th selection out of Summit High School in Oregon.
de Brun, 18, was the fourth of seven first-day picks for the Orioles, and his selection was lauded by the draft media experts. He batted .370/.586/.603 with nine doubles, one triple, two home runs, 26 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 29 games during his senior season.
The Oregon native is a left-handed hitter, 65-grade runner and 60-grade fielder, and the Corbin Carroll comps were prevalent leading up to the draft.
Only one of them can claim to be an aspiring musician who goes by Lil Slayyy” and has put out country singles like “Break My Heart” and “Find me a Bar.” de Brun can afford to buy a round for the house, but he isn’t old enough to partake.
“Slater is one of the more charismatic and likeable people that you’ll ever meet,” Matt Blood, vice president of player development and domestic scouting, said after Day 1 of the draft. “He’s got a lot of energy, he’s great to be around, he works really, really hard. He’s very deliberate and diligent about everything that he does, cares a lot.
“That’s a great place to start when you’re talking about an 18-year-old kid who can really run, play center field, makes a ton of contact as well, a lot of line drives, walks as well. Another one of these contact guys who also walks. We feel like all those things combined give him a pretty good chance to have some success.”
To sign de Brun, the Orioles had to convince him to back away from his commitment to Vanderbilt University. They dangled a signing bonus of $4 million, per a source – and first reported by The Baltimore Banner – that exceeded the $2.63 million slot value by a considerable margin.
The Orioles had $19,144,500 in bonus pool money, the highest amount since its creation in 2012.
Today’s deal also allowed the Orioles to get a return for reliever Bryan Baker, traded to the Rays for the Competitive Balance A Round selection that they turned into de Brun.
Baseball America ranks him as the organization’s No. 12 prospect.
The deadline to sign draft picks is Monday at 5 p.m.
