The Orioles acquired right-hander Colin Selby, 26, from the Royals today for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk. Kyle Bradish was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room on a full 40-man roster.
Selby, a Virginia native, made two relief appearances with the Royals and allowed two earned runs (three total) in three innings. He appeared in 21 games with the Pirates last season, making five starts, and had a 9.00 ERA and 1.833 WHIP in 24 innings.
He’s averaged 5.7 walks and 10 strikeouts per nine innings in the majors.
Austin Hays remains in left field, as the Orioles try to avoid being swept by the Cubs in their three-game series.
Hays is slashing .340/.379/.574 (32-for-94) with 13 doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs, three walks, four hit-by-pitches and 14 runs in 35 games since returning from the injured list on May 13.
Jordan Westburg has an eight-game hitting streak, one shy of his career high. He’s at third base tonight.
Cedric Mullins is in center field. James McCann is catching.
Albert Suárez has posted a 2.48 ERA and 1.209 WHIP in 18 games (11 starts). He has back-to-back quality starts against the Rangers and Athletics.
Suárez made two appearances against the Cubs in 2016, including one start, and allowed two runs and three hits in eight innings.
The Yankees crept within two games of the Orioles, who went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position last night and are 12-for-68 in their last eight.
Per STATS, the Orioles have registered a .260 average in the seventh inning or later that’s the second-best in the majors.
The Orioles face another left-hander, Justin Steele, an All-Star last season who’s posted a 2.95 ERA and 0.996 WHIP in 13 starts. He’s surrendered only eight home runs in 79 1/3 innings.
Steele, celebrating his 29th birthday today, is on an impressive roll. He allowed one run and two hits in a complete-game win over the Angels in his last outing and has six quality starts in a row and seven of eight. His ERA was 5.68 on May 22.
Left-handers are batting .163 with a .492 OPS against Steele and right-handers are batting .215 with a .608 OPS.
Steele has allowed five earned runs and six total in 11 innings in two career starts against the Orioles. Hays is 3-for-6. Adley Rutschman has one hit, a home run, in six at-bats.

Coby Mayo followed with a home run and has reached base safely in 17 of 19 games since returning from the injured list on June 18. He’s batting .319 (23-for-72) during that span, with four doubles, six home runs, 18 RBIs, 13 walks and 15 runs.
