Berken has allowed one earned run (two total) and 15 hits, with four walks and 10 strikeouts, in 15 innings at Norfolk. He’s made three starts, as the Orioles attempt to stretch him out. He could be used in long relief for however long he’s in Baltimore.
In his most recent outing, Berken tossed six innings on Friday, so he’d actually be working on normal rest if needed on Wednesday at Camden Yards.
Berken lost his chance to make the club in spring training because of a hamstring injury.
The Orioles will be working with a short bench unless another move is made. And it will be even shorter if outfielder Nolan Reimold remains unavailable with neck stiffness.
The assumption here is the Orioles figure that Reimold will be able to play Wednesday. Otherwise, bringing up a pitcher makes little sense.
Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty will start at second base on Wednesday, according to manager Buck Showalter.
