Burnett was optioned over the weekend to make room for Steve Johnson, who later was optioned to make room for reliever Mike Belfiore, who was optioned yesterday.
Got all that?
Burnett appeared in one game for the Orioles, striking out one in a scoreless inning in Minnesota. The Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on April 12.
Burnett has allowed two runs and 11 hits in 12 innings with Norfolk, with two walks and eight strikeouts. He threw 16 pitches in two-thirds of an inning yesterday.
Because he’s replacing an injured player, Burnett isn’t required to stay in the minors for a minimum of 10 days.
The Orioles also must replace Belfiore on the roster. Executive vice president Dan Duquette indicated that it could be a position player. However, I’m hearing that it won’t be Tides infielder Russ Canzler, so cross him off the list of candidates.
The Orioles need a starter for Saturday, so Burnett’s stay could be brief again.
Update: Since Burnett is rejoining the team, Steve Johnson can’t be recalled to make Saturday’s start. He, too, could only be recalled if replacing an injured player.
Jair Jurrjens would be working on normal rest Saturday after starting last night for Norfolk. He’s a prime candidate. We’ll see.
