Former Yankees manager and executive Gene “Stick Michael died of a heart attack, according to a report in the New York Daily News. He was 79.

Michael served as general manager while Buck Showalter managed the Yankees. Showalter has spoken fondly of Michael over the ensuing years, considering him to be a mentor and sharing favorite stories with the beat crew here. This will be a rough day for the Orioles’ skipper.
