Left-hander Keegan Akin has held opponents to one run in each of his last two starts totaling 12 innings. He shut out the Yankees in three relief innings on Aug. 3.
Akin also came out of the bullpen against the Yankees on May 15 and allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Corey Kluber is making his first start since Aug. 30 and second since May 25. He’s faced the Orioles twice this season, both in Baltimore, and allowed five runs in 12 2/3 innings.
Kluber is 5-1 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.081 WHIP in nine career starts against the Orioles over 62 innings.
The Yankees placed pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain and recalled pitcher Albert Abreu from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Orioles are 6-9 against the Yankees this season and 3-5 in the Bronx. They’re 3-15 in their last 18 games at Yankee Stadium, with the last series win coming in Brandon Hyde’s first as manager on March 28-31, 2019.
