Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is out of the lineup today in Toronto after striking out four times last night.
Davis has fanned 33 times in 66 at-bats over his last 18 games.
Trey Mancini is at first base and John Andreoli is the designated hitter as the Orioles try to avoid the sweep and finally win a game at Rogers Centre. They’ve gone 0-9 this season.
Craig Gentry is in left field. Austin Wynns is catching.
Rookie David Hess made a June 7 start in Toronto and allowed only one run in six innings on Curtis Granderson’s leadoff homer. Brad Brach allowed three runs in the ninth to blow the save and Toronto won it in the 10th against Miguel Castro.
Jays rookie left-hander Thomas Pannone, a ninth-round pick of the Indians in 2013, is making his first major league start today and fifth appearance. He’s allowed two runs and three hits with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. He hasn’t thrown more than 30 pitches.
Pannone, who’s replacing injured Marcus Stroman in the rotation, made six starts at Triple-A Buffalo and allowed 20 earned runs (21 total) and 40 hits in 36 2/3 innings. He served an 80-game suspension, handed out in March, after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
Since making his major league debut on Aug. 10, center fielder Cedric Mullins is batting .333 (13-for-39) with seven extra-base hits.
