The Orioles are drawing closer to a deal that would send catcher Steve Clevenger to the Mariners for first baseman Mark Trumbo, according to a source.

The two teams also were engaged in trade talks at the non-waiver deadline in July. However, the Orioles weren’t willing to part with Clevenger, according to another source.

steve-clevenger_mask.pngClevenger is out of options and became more expendable after Matt Wieters accepted the $15.8 million qualifying offer. The Orioles have considered carrying him as a third catcher who also can move to other positions, but he may be headed to Seattle.

The Baltimore native served as the primary left-handed designated hitter in September as Jimmy Paredes continued to slump. He made $514,000 this season while batting .287/.314/.426 with four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 15 RBIs in 30 games.

The Orioles acquired Clevenger and Scott Feldman from the Cubs on July 2, 2013 for Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop.

Trumbo is a non-tender candidate, but I’ve heard that the Orioles expect him to be offered a contract by Wednesday’s deadline. He’s projected to make around $9 million in 2016, so moving him would provide some salary relief to the Mariners.

Trumbo would provide insurance at first base if the Orioles fail to re-sign Chris Davis. He also can play the outfield and serve as a right-handed designated hitter.

Defense isn’t one of Trumbo’s strengths. He would be most useful in a DH role.

More details need to be worked out before a deal is consummated. I’m told only that it’s close.

The Tacoma News Tribune first reported that Clevenger was part of the trade talks.
