The Orioles announced today that infielder Paul Janish and first baseman David Washington are staying in the organization.

Janish has been outrighted multiple times again this season and could have refused the assignment and elected free agency. But he’s back at Norfolk and likely to get most of the starts at shortstop.

The Orioles most recently designated Janish for assignment on Saturday while removing pitcher Chris Tillman from the paternity list. He’s 2-for-26 with three RBIs this season, but the Orioles keep him in the organization because of his defense.

They selected his contract on June 19 while placing shortstop J.J. Hardy on the disabled list with a fractured right wrist.

Janish is batting .246/.359/.356 in 40 games with Norfolk.

The Orioles selected Washington’s contract on June 14 while placing first baseman Chris Davis on the disabled list with a strained right oblique. Washington made his major league debut on June 14 in Chicago, received six at-bats in three games and struck out five times.

It’s been a slightly different story for Washington at Norfolk. He’s batting .282/.335/.506 with 19 doubles, 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 71 games. He’s struck out 93 times in 259 at-bats.

The Orioles designated Washington for assignment on Thursday and selected second baseman Johnny Giavotella’s contract from Norfolk. They will need to make room for Davis on the 25-man roster on Friday after he’s activated from the disabled list.

The Orioles will team up with Maryland Food Bank to collect food and monetary donations throughout the three-game series that begins on Friday.
