NEW YORK – The Orioles have switched from a balanced roster, going with three catchers today after reinstating James McCann from the injured list.
Left-hander Cionel Pérez is on the 15-day IL with left forearm soreness, a move backdated to yesterday.
Lefty Bruce Zimmermann has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, eligible because he’s replacing an injured player. Reliever Chris Vallimont was optioned after making his major league debut last night and recording his first career strikeout.
Pérez has registered a 4.45 ERA and 1.780 WHIP in 33 games, averaging 4.7 walks per nine innings. His last five appearances have been scoreless.
Losing Pérez reduces the bullpen to seven relievers. The club held onto catcher Anthony Bemboom, who’s out of minor league options.
McCann made two appearances with Double-A Bowie on his injury rehab assignment and rejoined the club in New York. He sprained his left ankle in a June 17 game at Wrigley Field.
Adley Rutschman is 8-for-22 in his last five games. He’s a career .367/.472/.517 hitter in 16 games against the Yankees, with 22 hits in 60 at-bats.
Anthony Santander is 17-for-55 (.309) in his last 13 games. His double in the seventh inning last night registered 110.9 mph, the hardest-hit ball of his career.
Cedric Mullins was 0-for-15 before last night’s RBI single in the second inning.
Kyle Gibson has allowed 11 runs and 16 hits in his last two starts over 7 2/3 innings. He tossed seven shutout innings with two hits allowed on May 25 at Yankee Stadium
Gibson is 2-6 with a 5.93 ERA and 1.526 WHIP in 11 career starts against the Yankees. He has a 3.21 ERA in five starts in the Bronx.
Josh Donaldson is 6-for-16 with a double and three home runs against Gibson.
The Orioles have lost five of their last six games and lead the Yankees by three in the division. The Rays are six ahead of them.
Last night’s loss left the Orioles 7-13 against New York since 2022.
Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt has posted a 4.37 ERA and 1.421 WHIP in 17 starts this season. He’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in his last eight, though he’s completed six innings only once in that span.
Schmidt has faced the Orioles twice this season and allowed five runs in 8 1/3 innings. He held them to one run in five innings at Yankee Stadium.
Santander is 4-for-7 with a double against Schmidt.
Left-handed hitters are batting .304/.392/.489 against Schmidt in his career.
