The latest Orioles minor leaguer headed for the disabled list is Bowie right-hander The latest Orioles minor leaguer headed for the disabled list is Bowie right-hander Dan Klein.
Klein has right shoulder soreness and is expected to be put on the seven-day DL on Monday. He was off to one of the best starts of any O’s minor league pitcher.
Klein, a third-round pick last June out of UCLA, began this year at Frederick and went 0-1 with an ERA of 1.15. He moved to Bowie in early May and was 3-0 with an ERA of 1.08 over nine games there. In 16 2/3 innings with the Baysox, he had walked three and fanned 16.
There was even some speculation that the Orioles were considering moving Klein to Triple-A soon, but now that will be delayed as they wait to see the severity of this injury.
The hope is that this soreness will calm down and Klein could be back pitching soon.
Klein took a redshirt year at UCLA in 2009 due to shoulder soreness but returned as the closer last season for the Bruins.
Here is an article I wrote with then Orioles scout Gil Kubski about Klein’s shoulder injury from 2009. Kubski, it should be pointed out, no longer works for the Orioles, but as far as I know, that had nothing to do with Klein.
