The Orioles made the obvious decision with their rotation, recalling left-hander Cade Povich from Triple-A Norfolk to start tonight’s series opener against the Yankees that begins another road trip.
Reliever Cam Foster was optioned to make room.
Povich has a 2.19 ERA in two appearances with the Orioles, including one start. He’s allowed three runs in 12 1/3 innings.
In four career starts against the Yankees, Povich has surrendered 10 runs and 14 hits with 17 walks and 14 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings.
Povich is back in the rotation with Trevor Rogers on the 15-day injured list while battling the flu. Kyle Bradish and Shane Baz are expected to start the next two games. The Orioles will need a starter for Monday.
The Orioles haven’t posted their lineup, but Adley Rutschman is expected to be in it.
Rutschman has a .413 career on-base percentage against the Yankees that ranks as the third-highest in the majors among active players.
Rutschman is one hit shy of 500 as he enters his 522nd game tonight. He’d become the ninth-fastest Oriole by games to reach that mark since 2000, per STATS.
More Rutschman: He’s batting .467 with four home runs and 14 RBIs over his seven-game hitting streak. The last Oriole to reach those totals over any seven-game span is Trey Mancini in September 2019 (.469 average, four homers, 16 RBIs), per STATS.
Taylor Ward has walked in nine consecutive games, one shy of tying the club record. Boog Powell twice walked in 10 straight games, in 1969 and 1973. Ken Singleton walked in 10 straight in 1978.
Ward’s nine straight games tie him with Powell in 1965 and 1968.
The Orioles go from playing back-to-back series at home against last-place clubs to facing the first-place Yankees in a four-game set in the Bronx.
New York has won 10 of its last 12 games and is 20-11, the best record in the American League. The plus-47 run differential also leads the AL.
Aaron Judge is tied for the major league home run lead with 12. He’s a career .321/.456/.733 hitter against the Orioles in 120 games, with 20 doubles, 51 home runs and 109 RBIs.
Judge is 2-for-3 with two homers against Povich.
Ben Rice is batting .327/.443/.714 this season, with eight doubles, 10 homers and 23 RBIs in 30 games.
Craig Albernaz is trying to become the fourth Orioles manager to win his first career series at Yankee Stadium, per STATS. Brandon Hyde did it in 2019, Dave Trembley in 2007 and Earl Weaver in 1968.
The Yankees went 9-4 against the Orioles last year, including a three-game sweep at home to end the regular season.
Right-hander Will Warren is 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts this season. He’s walked seven and struck out 37 in 31 1/3 innings and surrendered only three home runs.
Warren is making his fifth career start against the Orioles, the first four coming last season. He’s posted a 4.95 ERA and 1.450 WHIP in 20 innings.
Colton Cowser is 3-for-7 with three doubles against Warren.
The Yankees have a plus-11 run differential in the first inning this season, the second highest in the majors behind the Nationals’ plus-19. New York has scored 139 runs in the first inning since the start of last season to lead the majors.
