The Orioles were forced to go back to the injured list today. They can’t seem to avoid it for long.

Left-hander Cade Povich is on the 15-day IL with left elbow inflammation, which removed him from last night’s start in Miami after only three innings. The team’s total is up to 12.

Right-hander Trey Gibson is recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. He’s eligible to return early because he’s replacing an injured player.

Manager Craig Albernaz can explain the move and whether Gibson is working in long relief after making his major league debut Sunday with a start in New York.

The bullpen is carrying an extra reliever if that’s Gibson’s role, perhaps until left-hander Trevor Rogers is reinstated from the IL. He’s eligible to return Monday, assuming that he’s recovered from the flu.

The latest roster scramble is happening while the Orioles begin their next homestand tonight with a game against the Athletics.

Coby Mayo is the designated hitter tonight and Blaze Alexander is playing third base.

Leody Taveras is in center field.

Kyle Bradish is making his eighth start and will try to lower his 5.03 ERA, 1.824 WHIP and 5.6 walks per nine innings. He’s made one career start against the Athletics and tossed six scoreless innings with two hits and eight strikeouts.

The Orioles are 12-0 when scoring at least six runs and 5-21 at five runs or fewer. They’re slugging .758 with the bases loaded this season, second best in majors behind the Diamondbacks (1.000).

The Orioles are 0-8 against left-handed starters and tonight they face Jacob Lopez, a 26th-round pick of the Giants in 2018.

Lopez has made six starts and seven appearances overall and posted a 6.60 ERA and 1.900 WHIP, with 35 hits and 22 walks in 30 innings. He’s struck out 23.

Lopez has made one career start against the Orioles and allowed an unearned run in four innings. Tonight marks his first appearance at Camden Yards.

The Athletics are one of four American League teams above .500, with a 19-18 record that puts them in first place in the West division. They have a minus-10 run differential, compared to the Orioles’ minus-37.

Their .734 OPS ranks sixth in the majors. Their 4.57 ERA is 22nd and 1.46 WHIP 27th.  The bullpen’s 4.82 ERA and 1.50 WHIP are 26th.

Catcher Shea Langeliers is batting .338/.391/.640 with nine doubles, 11 home runs and 20 RBIs. Nick Kurtz has a .413 on-base percentage.

Kurtz has reached base in 31 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors. The last Athletics player to have a longer run was Jack Cust with a 40-game streak from 2008-09, per STATS.

The Orioles have gone 18 straight home series against the Athletics without being swept. Per STATS, that’s their longest streak against the A’s since a 34-series run from June 1959-August 1970.
