Manager Dave Trembley will write Brian Roberts’ name in the lineup again tomorrow for the home opener.
Roberts told Trembley that he wanted to play tonight and is ready to go. Look for him to sit during one of the weekend games.
Roberts is 0-for-10 after two games.
“He’s had some good at-bats, seen a lot of pitches, fouled off a lot of pitches, worked the count,” Trembley said. “The hits haven’t fallen in for him. Roberts is 0-for-10 after two games.
“He’s had some good at-bats, seen a lot of pitches, fouled off a lot of pitches, worked the count,” Trembley said. “The hits haven’t fallen in for him. I’m sure he’s not where he wants to be, simply because he didn’t have that many at-bats in spring training, but I’ve said it before, he makes our team better. He’s a premiere leadoff guy.
“Roberts makes our offense go, and if Roberts were to get on those first two games, we might have scored some more runs because he makes it a little bit better for all the guys hitting behind him. It hasn’t happened yet, but tonight would be a good time to get it started.
“He’s coming along. He said he’s seeing the ball good.”
Roberts is 8-for-18 with two homers and four RBIs lifetime against Rays starter Jeff Niemann.
Koji Uehara is eligible to come off the disabled list on Sunday, but he still hasn’t thrown off a mound, according to the most recent reports. Trembley is going to get another update tomorrow.
As far as Trembley knows, Uehara has played catch, but that’s the extent of his throwing.
