Wesley Wright threw off a mound today in Sarasota and the reports on him were positive. Wright is on the DL with a strained left trapezius muscle.
Reliever Brian Matusz wasn’t available the past two games after taking a comebacker off his thumb in New York. He’s fine now and can be used if needed.
The Orioles are waiting for the results of Hunter Harvey’s MRI. Harvey felt some stiffness in his right elbow Sunday at extended spring training.
The Orioles are hoping for good news, of course, but there’s definite concern in the organization based on his symptoms.
Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia, placed on the disabled list today with tendinitis in his right shoulder, will head down to Sarasota on Thursday to begin rehabbing.
Garcia said he’ll try to “regroup and get back here.”
The Orioles want to see Garcia’s velocity return to the upper 90s. He’s been 91-93 this season, an indication that something is wrong with his shoulder.
“Just figure it’s probably a little dead arm,” he said. “Getting used to relieving and what-not and everyday throwing.
“Recovery-wise it hasn’t been as good as I want it to be. Being a starter, you have those couple days. Relieving, it’s tougher on the arm, I think. I’ve always noticed I wasn’t able to regroup as quick.”
Garcia is disappointed that his rookie season is interrupted by a trip to the disabled list, but he knows it’s the right move.
“I’m a little bummed out,” he said, “but I think staying here and not saying anything is hurting the team, so go down there and try to regroup and get strong and come back and help the team win.”
The Orioles recalled Mike Wright from Triple-A Norfolk, but they had other choices. They also considered Steve Johnson, Tyler Wilson and Oliver Drake.
