LAKELAND, Fla. – Catcher Matt Wieters will return to Sarasota for workouts after joining the Orioles for the three-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field that opens the 2015 season.
The Orioles want Wieters to eventually begin playing in extended spring training games while he’s on the disabled list. The plan also calls for him to play his rehab games at Double-A Bowie and Single-A Frederick and report each day to the Camden Yards clubhouse.

Manager Buck Showalter said Wieters will do some throwing on Saturday. He caught only one Grapefruit League game on May 17 before developing tendinitis in his right elbow.
Catcher J.P. Arencibia was scratched from today’s game at Twin Lake Park with a strained right flexor mass.
Arencibia caught in a Triple-A game yesterday and hit a home run. He took batting practice this morning and seemed fine, according to Showalter.
Showalter said outfielder Travis Snider is fine physically and will return to the lineup on Saturday against the Yankees in Tampa. Showalter has held him out of games against left-handers, but the Yankees switched starters and will go with right-hander Bryan Mitchell instead of southpaw CC Sabathia.
David Lough (back spasms) could return the lineup on Friday, but the weather may not cooperate. The forecast calls for thunderstorms.
The Red Sox already cancelled Friday’s minor league games against the Orioles in Fort Myers due to the forecast.
The Orioles will make their next round of cuts following Sunday’s split-squad games in Dunedin and Sarasota.
