Matusz will start Wednesday’s intrasquad game and pitch again later in the week before leaving camp. Manager Buck Showalter estimated that Matusz could miss four or five days.

Outfielder Quintin Berry will undergo an MRI on his back at 7 p.m., after leaving today’s workout with spasms. Outfielder Quintin Berry will undergo an MRI on his back at 7 p.m., after leaving today’s workout with spasms. Berry said it’s being done as a precaution.

Berry felt his back tighten up while playing catch in the outfield. He’s never experienced spasms before and the pain was severe, but he already was feeling better this afternoon, having regained much of his motion.

“I should be all right tomorrow,” he said. “They just want to rule everything out.”

Hitting coach Jim Presley wasn’t in camp today. He had an epidural injection in his neck to alleviate the discomfort from two bulging discs.

Presley should return on Tuesday.

First baseman Chris Marrero still can’t work out because of a sore oblique, and he won’t play in the two intrasquad games this week.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy said his agent, Mike Seal, met with team executives Brady Anderson and Tripp Norton a few days ago while in Sarasota on other business, but there was no “contract talk.”

Executive vice president Dan Duquette, who wasn’t in the room, has stated that he wants to sign Hardy to an extension before opening day.

“Maybe that’s the first step,” Hardy said. “It was just a conversation. No numbers. But it’s more than what there’s been so far. At least they had a conversation.”

Ubaldo Jimenez isn’t sure when he’ll start an exhibition game. He’s scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday and face live hitters in batting practice a few days later.

“I’ve been throwing,” he said. “Before I came here, I was throwing every day on flat ground, so my arm is in really good shape right now. I already threw two bullpens, so I don’t think I’m too far behind everybody.”
