Unfortunately, I don’t have velocity readings, so I can’t tell you whether he gained a few miles-per-hour on his fastball.

Matusz has made two starts for the Tides since being optioned by the Orioles. He gave up four runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 5 2/3 innings against Charlotte, and was removed after 87 pitches.

Matusz was 1-4 with an 8.77 ERA in six starts with the Orioles.

Mark Reynolds left today’s game at Fenway Park with a bruised right hand.

Jeremy Guthrie walked David Ortiz with the bases loaded to bring home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth.

Guthrie hit Kevin Youkilis on the elbow with a changeup to load the bases, and plate umpire Marty Foster issued warnings.

Did he really think Guthrie wanted to hit Youkilis in that situation? And with a changeup?

Update: Kyle Weiland was just tossed from his first major league start after hitting Vladimir Guerrero on the hand. Since both benches had been warned, the ejection was automatic.

Boston leads the league with 52 hit batters.

Meanwhile, Adam Jones turned his right ankle on a triple to left-center field. He stayed in the game, but he was in obvious pain after his foot slid off the bag.
