Brian Matusz lasted five innings tonight in his fifth start with Triple-A Norfolk since being optioned. He allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits, with three walks and no strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, 56 for strikes.
I don’t have any radar readings. He’s mostly been 87-88 mph in his last few starts, though he’s touched 90.
I’m not sure how he avoided giving up a run in the fourth. Matusz has allowed 18 runs (16 earned) and 31 hits in his five starts covering 26 2/3 innings, with 13 walks and 19 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, J.J. Hardy has homered twice and driven in four runs tonight, as the Orioles have built a 10-4 lead over the Blue Jays in the top of the sixth inning.
The Orioles have 14 hits and the usual fondness for Jake Arrieta when he’s on the mound. Nice run support.
Arrieta was hit on the right foot while getting the final out in the fifth inning. Looks like he’s done for the night.
Update: X-rays taken on Arrieta’s foot were negative. Just a bruise.
Derrek Lee is 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Is he trying to become a trade chip?
Nolan Reimold has two hits and two RBIs.
Update II: Lee’s two-run homer in the eighth gave the Orioles a 12-4 lead, and that’s your final score.
Lee went 4-for-5 with five RBIs. I wonder if he looks a little more attractive to some contenders.
