Kevin Gausman will be recalled and start today’s series finale against the Red Sox. Reliever Ramon Ramirez, who’s out of minor league options, is expected to be designated for assignment to create room.
Bud Norris is expected to start Tuesday night’s game against the Nationals in D.C. Manager Buck Showalter would like to give Norris two starts before the break.
Norris said he felt great after yesterday’s simulated game, though he got a scare when Wayne Kirby hit a sharp bouncer up the middle that deflected off his leg near his bruise.
The Orioles most likely will option one of their starters and add an extra reliever, as they’ve done in the past before the break. The chosen pitcher would make a start in the minors and rejoin the team later.
Showalter said first baseman Chris Davis will be back in the lineup on Monday. Davis has two hits in his last 34 at-bats. He played both ends of yesterday’s doubleheader and he’s 1-for-10 lifetime against Red Sox starter Jake Peavy.
Nelson Cruz said he hadn’t heard John Lackey’s postgame comments about him last night and didn’t seem to care, saying people are “free to talk.”
Cruz had a career-high five hits last night, including three off Lackey, who referenced the outfielder’s 50-game suspension last season for his part in the Biogenesis scandal.
“I’ve got nothing to say about him,” Lackey said. “There are some things that I would like to say, but I’m not going to. You guys forget pretty conveniently about stuff.”
Showalter didn’t have much to say about the comments.
“Sometimes,” he said, “we need to check our own backyard before talking about someone else’s.”
Update: The Orioles made the roster move official by recalling Gausman and designating Ramirez for assignment.
Ramirez, 32, made one scoreless appearance for the Orioles, striking out two in one inning after having his contract selected on June 30. He didn’t allow a run in eight innings at Triple-A Norfolk, walking none and striking out 14.
