The Orioles optioned right-hander Josh Stinson to Triple-A Norfolk after last night’s game and noted that the corresponding roster move would be announced today. The assumption, made by myself and others, was that the club would bring up a left-hander for the long relief role.
Why? Because the Orioles have three right-handers starting this weekend against the Blue Jays in the final series before the All-Star break. Manager Buck Showalter likes to have a contrasting long man backing up.

Well, that was the wrong assumption.
The Orioles are bringing up a right-handed pitcher today. I don’t have a name – it will appear on the lineup card posted outside the clubhouse in about 3 1/2 hours – but it’s not a southpaw.
Stinson is now listed as tonight’s starter for Norfolk, which begins a home series against Charlotte. Zach Britton and Kevin Gausman will pitch Sunday.
Jair Jurrjens is a right-hander and he’s on the 40-man roster, but he worked 6 1/3 innings on Tuesday.
Stay tuned, as they say.
