Orioles manager Buck Showalter doesn’t seem concerned about minor league shortstop Manny Machado’s left knee. He’s waiting for the results of today’s MRI, but conversations with team officials didn’t send up any red flags.
“Initially, they didn’t think it was anything serious,” Showalter said. “They were comparing it to what they thought it was, but until they get everything back, they’re not going to speculate. They were hoping it would be something not serious at this point.”
Showalter isn’t sure how long J.J. Hardy will stay on his injury rehab assignment, but the shortstop could be activated on Tuesday.
“I wouldn’t put an open or closed end on it,” Showalter said. “Keep in mind he’s been away from pitching for a while, but I wouldn’t plan to see him before Tuesday. But that could change. It depends on what he and Bobby (Dickerson) and everybody else says. It could be longer than that. Let’s get through the first day first and see where we are.”
Robert Andino is starting at shortstop again tonight, but Showalter will have to find at-bats for him once Hardy is activated.
“I don’t think it’s a problem,” Showalter said. “We’re looking forward to getting J.J. back and looking forward to continuing to take advantage of Robert’s skills. We have the ability to move him around, whether it be third base, shortstop, second base, outfield. We’ll still create some spots for him to play, and it’ll help us keep some people fresh, too. And we hope without a drop-off in production.”
Showalter met with president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail earlier today to discuss how the roster will be impacted by Hardy’s return and the eventual addition of Brian Matusz. Justin Duchscherer and Alfredo Simon also could be here at some point.
