Mark Reynolds reached on an infield hit after almost striking out for the second time. Plate umpire Ron Kulpa ruled that Reynolds got a piece of the Jeremy Hellickson pitch, which catcher John Jaso couldn’t hold.
On the next pitch, Reynolds sent a slow roller up the third base line that Evan Longoria hoped would roll foul. It didn’t, and Reynolds had his 10th hit in his last 75 at-bats. He also snapped an 0-for-17 streak.
Derrek Lee doubled in the fourth inning for his third extra-base hit in his last 10 games and 38 at-bats.
Jeremy Guthrie has retired seven of the last eight batters. He continues to trail, 2-0, in the top of the sixth. The Orioles continue to store their bats in the rack when he pitches.
Down on the farm, Triple-A Norfolk second baseman Ryan Adams hit his second home run of the season. He connected off Lehigh Valley’s Brian Bass, the former Orioles reliever.
Single-A Frederick second baseman Buck Britton, who had five RBIs last night while his brother, Zach, was throwing nine scoreless innings for the Orioles, is 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
