The Orioles moved today’s game from 6:35 p.m. to 1:35 p.m. due to a forecast calling for storms this afternoon and into the evening.
They’d also like to change the direction of their season.
A loss today would leave them a season-worst 10 games below .500. They’re 13 ½ out of first place, 1 ½ behind the fourth-place Red Sox, who have won five in a row, and 4 ½ out of the Wild Card.
Left-hander Trevor Rogers makes his 17th start. He’s posted a 4.70 ERA in 84 1/3 innings, but he’s crafted a 1.77 ERA in his last six appearances over 35 2/3 innings.
Rogers’ only career start against the Cubs was on Aug. 1, 2025 at Wrigley Field, when he held them to one run and four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in eight innings in a 1-0 loss.
Dansby Swanson is 6-for-15 with three doubles and a home run against Rogers. Carson Kelly is 4-for-8.
Adley Rutschman is leading off and serving as designated hitter, followed by Taylor Ward and Gunnar Henderson. Rutschman led off once last season.
Tyler O’Neill is in right field, Coby Mayo is at third base, Blaze Alexander is at second base and Leody Taveras is in center.
Pete Alonso became the 21st player (28th occurrence) in Orioles history last night to hit at least 20 home runs before the All-Star break.
O’Neill and Mayo smacked pinch-hit home runs last night. It marked the fifth time that the Orioles had two players come off the bench and homer in the same game, according to STATS. The others:
Vic Roznovsky and Boog Powell on Aug. 26, 1966 vs. the Red Sox
John Shelby and Bennie Ayala on May 5, 1984 vs. the Rangers
Wayne Gross and Larry Sheets on Aug. 12, 1985 vs. the Indians
Pat Valaika and Pedro Severino on Aug. 8, 2020 vs. the Nationals
Mayo became the eighth player to homer into the second deck with his 420-foot shot. The others:
Rex Hudler, Angels, June 11, 1995 off Jamie Moyer
Mark Reynolds, Orioles, Aug. 7, 2011 off Ricky Romero
Manny Machado, Orioles, June 2, 2017 off Rick Porcello
Edwin Encarnacion, Indians, June 20, 2017 off Chris Tillman
Pete Alonso, Mets, Sept. 2, 2020 off John Means
Maikel Franco, Orioles, June 8, 2021 off Robert Gsellman
Austin Hays, Orioles, June 7, 2022 off Alec Mills
Also, O’Neill was the first Oriole to come off the bench and homer twice in a game since Ramón Laureano on April 19, 2025 against the Reds.
The Mets traded left-hander David Peterson to the Cubs on June 25 and he’s allowed 12 runs and 14 hits in 9 1/3 innings in two starts. Ten of those runs came against the Cardinals in 3 2/3 innings in his most recent appearance. He posted a 6.09 ERA and 1.647 WHIP in 16 games (eight starts) with New York.
Right-handers are hitting .313 with an .823 OPS against Peterson this season, and left-handers are hitting .274 with an .809 OPS.
Peterson has faced the Orioles five times in his career and allowed seven earned runs (eight total) in 23 2/3 innings. He’s allowed five runs in 16 2/3 innings in his four appearances at Camden Yards.
Ian Happ has posted a .342 average and .921 slugging percentage against the first pitch this season.
The Orioles are 10-17 against left-handed starters.
