Scott’s locker is next to Vladimir Guerrero, the brooding slugger. It’s an interesting arrangement.

Guerrero better get used to smiling and nodding his head a lot.

Double-A infielder Ryan Adams also is here, leaving Derrek Lee, Nick Markakis and Pedro Florimon as the only position players who haven’t arrived.

Brad Bergesen is back after leaving yesterday because of an illness.

Guest instructors Brady Anderson and Mike Bordick have joined B.J. Surhoff in camp. It’s like a reunion here.

Troy Patton looked at Anderson, asked how old he was and politely requested that the former outfielder put on his shirt.

“You’re making us all look bad,” Patton said.

Anderson is 47.

Anderson trained Josh Bell over the winter. Bell’s weight ballooned to 246 pounds, but he’s shed about 25 and looks like a different person. You especially notice the change in Bell’s face.

Jake Arrieta will throw a bullpen session today. I asked him about Thursday’s session two days ago and never got a chance to run his quotes. Here they are:

“Two days ago (Tuesday), it was still pretty good, but the first few pitches were up,” he said. “I kind of expected that a little bit, throwing off a mound for the first time, trying to continue working on shortening my stride. But today was a lot better. Everything was down, breaking ball was sharp, changeup had a good change of speed and late movement – down and in to righties, away to lefties. I couldn’t be happier with it.”

Matt Wieters caught Arrieta that day.

“It’s nice to throw to him early in the year, just kind of see what he’s thinking and get some feedback from him, which is nice,” Arrieta said. “It’s good for me to get used to the look with him behind the plate. I’m a big fan of his target, the way he sets up. For such a big guy, he really gets low and gives you a good target, low in the zone. He makes my job a lot easier back there.”
