Less than 24 hours after registering his first scoreless appearance with the Orioles, right-hander Tayler Scott has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

The move likely has been made in order to reinstate left-hander John Means from the family medical emergency list and allow him to start Friday night’s series opener in Kansas City.

Means left the club on Sunday, with Scott replacing him on the active roster. Means held the Rays to one run over seven innings the previous night.

The Orioles haven’t provided any details on Means’ departure due to the personal nature of the situation.

Aaron Brooks is the only confirmed starter for the Orioles in Kansas City. He’s taking the ball Sunday afternoon. But Means is expected to start on Friday.

Scott worked the eighth inning last night at Nationals Park, put the first two runners on base and escaped the jam with two comebackers sandwiched around a ground ball to short. He had been charged with 16 runs in 5 2/3 innings in his first five appearances after the Orioles selected him off waivers from the Mariners on June 25.

Scott hasn’t surrendered a run in 15 innings with Norfolk.

Meanwhile, Double-A Bowie’s Buck Britton has been chosen as the Eastern League’s Manager of the Year.

Britton, the older brother of former Orioles closer Zack Britton, moved up from Single-A Delmarva to Bowie this year. He’s led the Baysox to a 74-61 record and they hold a one-game lead over the Erie SeaWolves for first place in the second half standings in the Western Division.

Update: The Orioles announced they’re extending the protective netting at Camden Yards. It will be the same height as the existing backstop netting down each foul line to near each foul pole.

The same work will also be done at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla., prior to spring training next year.
