Scott was activated this afternoon, but he was in obvious pain during his three plate appearances and would have been removed for a pinch-hitter if his turn came up in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Scott will have to decide whether to rehab the shoulder or undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum. His season could be over.

Scott was activated this afternoon, but he was in obvious pain during his three plate appearances and would have been removed for a pinch-hitter if his turn came up in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Orioles could recall outfielder Matt Angle from Triple-A Norfolk. He wouldn’t be required to spend 10 days in the minors because he’d be replacing an injured player.

“Talking to Luke, he was not going to take that last at-bat. Luke had a pretty good bite going on and we’re probably going to have to make an adjustment there tomorrow,” Showalter said.

“I think Luke is headed back to the disabled list. First at-bat he had discomfort. I talked to him between at-bats and didn’t particularly like what I was seeing, but he wasn’t giving in. I was hoping, starting out, it was something he would work through, but we said before it probably wasn’t going to heal until the off-season and we were hoping he could play through it. Even last night’s game in Bowie, he talked about the at-bats and the pitches that were thrown and the things they don’t do up here. He wanted to take a shot at it this weekend to see if it would be workable and I talked to him in the dugout before that last at-bat, and probably an avenue we don’t go down anymore.”

Scott’s season might have ended with his average at .220, with nine homers and 22 RBIs in 64 games. He was voted Most Valuable Oriole in 2010.

“I’m not going to put words in his mouth. Paint isn’t even dry,” Showalter said. “Luke is a tough guy. A lot of guys would want to have flown the coop, but he wanted to play. He knew it was something he would have to do anyway. I applaud him for that, the ‘want to,’ but it’s not fair to the Orioles or to Luke to proceed down this path anymore. But as far as what happens from here, that’s Luke’s decision. You’re going to see him rehab it or have surgery as we go forward, but that’s an educated guess by talking to him.”
