“We’ll see,” Showalter said. “Trying to.”

If he can pitch, get him on the next flight to New York.

Here’s a sampling of Showalter’s comments following tonight’s 8-5 loss to the Yankees:

On what happened to Gonzalez again in the middle innings:

On what happened to Gonzalez again in the middle innings:
“It hasn’t happened at Yankee Stadium much. You can make a trend look any way you want to. It’s all about tonight, and he pitched as well we you’d want to see him pitch there and he just wasn’t able to get over the hump. He obviously had a lot of rest and had some good work done, but he just kind of lost his command there. There just wasn’t much there for him all of a sudden. It came pretty quickly. But we gave up 13 or 14 hits. It wasn’t just Miguel.”

More on Gonzalez:
“We don’t hang it on one guy. Miguel’s pitched well for us and it didn’t happen for him tonight. He’ll get another chance to make a contribution. I know he’s really frustrated, but that one inning really got away from us a little bit. But we battled right back there and had some people on base. Danny (Valencia) almost blocked a ball over there, almost carried out. Our guys kept grinding and we’ll be ready tomorrow.”

And more on Gonzalez:
“He just lost command there and it happens. He’s not the only guy that it’s ever happened to. You can ask what happened to (CC) Sabathia there. It got away from (Gonzalez). A lot of times, he might do it for a hitter in the past and he gets right back in stride. He just couldn’t seem to get back into a consistent release point.”

And yes, more on Gonzalez:
“The first three innings were about as good as you’d want to see. Some things just don’t make a whole lot of sense, but you don’t dwell on them. We learn from them and that’s why we go out there and what appears something on paper… Same way with Sabathia. If you had taken a bet that both of those guys would be out of the game well before the seventh inning, you probably would have made some money tonight.”

On whether Gonzalez is tired:
“I don’t think that’s the issue. If anything, he might be feeling a little too much mustard. It could be on the other side. He was carrying 92, 93 mph tonight, which is usually a step up. I think you’ll see him better next time out. Probably get a little more on schedule. I know he’s frustrated.”
